Nursery Rhymes and Rosh Hashanah

It's been a busy week in Room 108! We have been learning Nursery Rhymes, including Old Woman in a Shoe, Humpty Dumpty and Hickory Dickory Dock. We will be revisiting these nursery rhymes and learning many others over the course of the school year as we learn more about our alphabet!

We were also fortunate enough to have Mrs. Sharon Williams (mom of Ezra) and her father came to our classroom to share some of the traditions surrounding the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah. The children enjoyed the book Sammy Spider's First Rosh Hashanah. This book is about a spider named Sammy who witnesses a family's celebration of the holiday by getting cards, eating apples and honey and blowing the shofar (a ram's horn). Sammy is so excited by what he sees that he wants to celebrate too. The book also targeted the concepts of small, medium and large. After the story, Ezra and Mrs. Williams blew the shofar, demonstrating how the new year begins during this important holiday. Each student was also able to taste apples and honey, a traditional treat during Rosh Hashanah.

Thank you, Mrs. Williams and Ezra! We all enjoyed our time with you learning about your special holiday. I think many of us may have found a new favorite treat in apples and honey!

Below you will find pictures of our nursery rhyme days as well as those from Mrs. Williams' visit.

Enjoy!!
